Alliance Française de Hartford
Spring 2009 Courses

January 20th - April 23rd

The Alliance Française de Hartford offers all levels of classes providing continuity for a solid knowledge of standard French. It is a unique opportunity to experience the language and culture of the francophone world in an informal, supportive learning environment.

The emphasis is on oral proficiency and self-expression built upon a solid foundation of French grammatical principles. Teachers are native speakers holding diplomas from universities in French-speaking countries or anglophones with minimum of masters degrees in French from accredited American universities.

All our language classes offer an immersion experience in the French language; they are taught in French using the “direct method.” Students are encouraged to express themselves in French. Grammar is a tool, not a goal.

Classes are usually limited to eight students; extra courses are normally added in case of larger enrollments.

Soirée Lecture et Conversation:  Come explore two of the greatest 20th century French philosophers:  Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus.  Camus, a French philosopher and journalist, won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Sartre, known as a great philosopher and existentialist, was awarded the same honor, but refused to accept it. In this course, you will study Sartre’s Le Mur, composed of 5 short stories that make up one of his most famous fictional existentialist works.   Camus’ L’étranger, considered one of the most famous novels of the 20th century, deals with the absurdity of human existence.

This hysterical vaudeville of Georges Feydeau refers to a fellow named Pontagnac who spends his time romancing wives of others. Practice your French through the most ludicrous situations; misunderstandings, intrigues, revenge plots, mistaken identity and ever-slamming doors! A must for theatre fans of today’s Paris stage! A must in your life as a of French!

Cours Politique: This course offers advanced students an opportunity to discuss foreign policy issues that are part and parcel of the current news in France, in the United States of America, and around the world. The starting point of our open discussions will be GREAT DECISIONS 2008, a top notch nonpartisan publication made up of articles authored by eminent foreign policy experts. Join us for these musings on issues such as Europe, Terrorism, US Defense policy, Philanthropy, and many other global issues. We will emerge from this course with a heightened awareness, a better understanding, a well-informed opinion on global issues, and a well-honed speaking ability in French.
