ANNUAL MEETING & CONFERENCE
Midi-Pyrénées: An Arousal of Your Senses
A Talk by Anna Leguen with regional wine & cheese tasting

FRIDAY, MAY 16th at 6 P.M.
Grand Vestibule, 233 Pearl Street
Members - $15, nonmembers - $20

The Alliance Française of Hartford is fortunate to have Anna Leguen present a conference on her native Midi-Pyrénées. Anna is finishing a one-year internship working with Sharon Straka at the Center for Teaching French at Yale University.

Anna’s presentation will be followed by a brief meeting to elect officers and directors for the 2008- 2009 Board of Directors. This will be followed by wine and hearty hors d’oeuvres provided by Michelle Catering (back by popular demand after her success at our Fête du Beaujolais Nouveau). Come enjoy good food and conversation at this special gathering of friends at the Alliance Française of Hartford!

Anna LeguenAnna is looking forward to helping AFH members and guests discover her region, located in southwestern France. Midi-Pyrénées is often associated with the city of Toulouse, well-known for dynamism and economic growth and, very recently, with one the most impressive architectural works of all time: the Viaduc of Millau. Midi-Pyrénées remains very proud of the traditions that have built its renown, whether they be historical (the Cathedral of Sainte-Cécile in Albi, the Place du Capitole in Toulouse), cultural (Toulouse Lautrec, Cité de l’Espace) or culinary (Confit de Canard, Foie Gras, or the famous Cassoulet).

To help you discover her region, Anna will present a tasting to captivate your taste buds! Thanks to the wonderful participation of the famous Fromageries Papillon, this presentation will be embellished with the prestigious and proudly conserved treasure of Midi-Pyrénées, the unsurpassed Roquefort, also known as the “King of the Cheeses”. We will discover this delicacy born more than 2.000 years ago, and learn all about its production and taste. We will also have the pleasure of discovering different facets of the ewe’s milk through tastings of several goat cheeses.

Finally, it would be impossible to taste such treats without an accompanying great wine! There is nothing better than the famous Sauternes, recommended by the greatest French Chefs to accompany Roquefort. The wine will be provided by the Maison du Sauternes.

Please RSVP by May 9th! Call the office to reserve using your credit card or send a check to the AFH office

Encourage Promising French Students:
Give a Donation to the Robert McFarland Memorial Book Awards Fund

The Alliance Française of Hartford has for many years recognized the most promising students of French with a book and a certificate given at a ceremony held in their honor each spring. In the fall of 2006, the Board of Directors of the Alliance Française of Hartford established an Annual Giving Society to recognize charitable contributions for the purpose of supporting the Robert McFarland Memorial Book Awards.

After the death of past AFH President Robert McFarland after a long battle with cancer in May, 2002, memorial contributions from Bob’s family and friends poured into the Alliance as per Bob’s expressed wishes. It was felt fitting to dedicate these funds to the purchase of books for the Book Awards Ceremony and the Awards officially became known as the Robert McFarland Book Award Ceremony.

This fund has continued to support the purchase of books for the past five years, but it needs new benefactors to sustain it. Please consider becoming one of our “bienfaiteurs” and choose to give at one of the following levels:

  • $25 - $99 Ami(e) de St. Exupéry
  • $100 - $199 Ami(e) de Molière
  • $200 - $299 Ami(e) de Balzac
  • $300+ Ami(e) de Hugo

All donors will be recognized in our newsletter and donors at the highest level will be invited to attend the Book Awards reception to be recognized there as well.

The Alliance Française de Hartford gratefully acknowledges the HARTFORD FOUNDATION FOR PUBLIC GIVING for its continuing generosity through grant support for our strategic initiatives.
