The
Alliance Française de Hartford offers all levels of classes providing
continuity for a solid knowledge of standard French. It is a unique
opportunity to experience the language and culture of the francophone
world in an informal, supportive learning environment.
The
emphasis is on oral proficiency and self-expression built upon a solid
foundation of French grammatical principles. Teachers are native
speakers holding diplomas from universities in French-speaking
countries or anglophones with minimum of masters degrees in French from
accredited American universities.
All our language classes offer an immersion experience in the French
language; they are taught in French using the “direct method.” Students
are encouraged to express themselves in French. Grammar is a tool, not
a goal.

LOCATION & PARKING: The Alliance Française of
Hartford is located at 233 Pearl Street (3rd
floor) in Harford 06103. Students may park in the LAZ surface lot (Hilton
lot) on Pearl Street at the Jewell St. intersection (across from Fire
House Nº 4) where the rate is $3 after 5 pm. In addition, students may
park in the Goodwin Garage on Ann Street but must have their ticket
validated by a teacher in order to qualify for the $5 rate. Street
parking is also often available and is free after 6 pm. If there is an
event at the XL Center, no parking discounts apply.
Please Note:
New students with previous
knowledge of French are required to take a brief placement evaluation
either
on-line or in person before registering. This evaluation, based on
reading and
writing skills, will allow placement at the proper linguistic level. In
addition, we suggest you attend the Open House/Class Registration that
precedes the fall and summer semesters so that you can speak with one of our teachers. A brief
oral
interview is the best way to ascertain your readiness for a given
level. If you
are unable to attend the Open House or you are registering for the spring semester, an oral interview by phone can be
arranged
by calling the office at 860-278-9999.
